Contemporary

Contemporary for children and teens in the Netherlands

Contemporary is a modern dance style in which movement becomes a way to express a dancer’s emotions, character, and inner state. Fluidity, musicality, freedom of movement, and bodywork make Contemporary one of the most expressive styles in modern choreography.

Talent Center DDC invites children and teens to Contemporary classes in the Netherlands. Our classes welcome both beginners who are just discovering modern choreography and students with dance experience.

What is Contemporary?

Contemporary Dance, or simply “contemp,” is a modern choreography style that combines elements and principles from various dance techniques.

In Contemporary, you can see the influence of modern dance, classical choreography, jazz dance, improvisation, and floorwork — the technique of working with movement on the floor.

Unlike styles that focus mainly on precisely repeating specific movements, Contemporary lets the dancer explore their body’s possibilities and work with space, dynamics, weight, and emotion.

What matters here isn’t just how the movement looks, but what the dancer wants to express with it.

What does Contemporary develop?

Contemporary classes help develop both physical and creative abilities at the same time.

In training, students work on:

  • coordination and body control;
  • flexibility and fluidity;
  • balance;
  • musicality and sense of rhythm;
  • floorwork technique;
  • quality and range of movement;
  • improvisation;
  • emotional expression;
  • artistry and stage presence;
  • confidence in one’s own movement.

Great attention is paid to helping the student gradually understand their body, the music, and the connection between them.

Contemporary for children and teens

Contemporary is especially interesting for children and teens because it offers room for creativity and self-expression.

In class, students not only learn set choreography but also learn to work independently with movement.

The choreographer may give tasks focused on improvisation, musicality, and interacting with the space or other dancers.

This approach helps develop imagination and gradually shape an individual performance style.

Can you start Contemporary from scratch?

Yes. Previous dance experience is not required.

For beginners, training is structured gradually — from basic principles of movement and coordination to more complex combinations.

In the early stages, students get introduced to:

basic technique → coordination → working with body weight → floorwork → musicality → choreographic combinations.

As students progress, more advanced technique, improvisation, and work on their own quality of movement are added to classes.

For children and teens who already have experience in classical or modern choreography, Contemporary can be a great way to expand their dance abilities.
